Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 5 Players That Could Leave This Summer

It has certainly been an eventful first full season for Kenny Dalglish’s second coming as Liverpool manager. A campaign that promised so much looks like it’s ending with more questions than answers.

At times brilliant, Liverpool are definitely not short in quality on paper, but putting that into action on the pitch has been a difficult transition.

Even a Carling Cup win on Sunday will not keep the fans at bay for too long, especially if they finish outside the top six.

It was always going to be a transitional period post Rafa Benitez, but there has been plenty of money spent for very little reward.

A summer of change is needed if the glory days are to return. Here are five players whose time on Merseyside may well be up.

Napoli v Chelsea: 6 Things We Learned About Andre Villas-Boas and His Team

What were you doing in the spring of 1996?*

If you supported an English team that season, you probably weren’t interested in the final three rounds of the UEFA Champions League. That was the last time the English Premier League failed to place a team in the quarterfinals of Europe’s premier club competition.

Watch out. We’re two matches away from a repeat.

Actually, that’s too generous. Two English teams remain in this year’s competition, but only one has a prayer. And that’s all Chelsea have right now. Arsenal’s 4-0 loss last week at AC Milan all but eliminated the Gunners from the Champions League, and Chelsea’s 3-1 loss Tuesday night at Napoli nearly did the same.

How bad was it for Chelsea? Well, the Blues did create chances, but Andre Villas-Boas’ defense was so porous and error-prone that Fernando Torres could have hit a hat trick.

OK, that was a low blow. But Chelsea are so low after Tuesday night that they probably wouldn’t even notice.

Real Madrid vs. CSKA Moscow: Epic Match Awaits After Brilliant Moscow Finish

The majority of Tuesday’s Champions League match between Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow had been dominated by Real Madrid. We were shown once again that this is a sport of moments, and Moscow finished with a brilliant one.

There was an overriding assumption heading into the final moments of this match, and that was Moscow would have an insurmountable deficit heading into the Bernabeu for the second leg of Champions League play.

Real Madrid dominated most of the match, owning possession and the large complement of corner kicks. They looked like they would cruise in the match at Luzhniki Stadium, but will instead have to prove their mettle without question at home.

In the third minute of extra time, Pontus Wernbloom sent home the equalizer and gave Moscow a bit of hope that was all but extinguished moments prior.

There is no way Moscow goes into Spain and comes away with Champions League win, not with a deficit to manage. Now the improbable is indeed possible.

Real Madrid have to hang their heads after a myriad of chances went dry. You simply can’t leave anything to chance at this time of year. With 15 shots and eight on goal, they were certainly there.

This sport of moments and build-up saw 90 minutes of flirting before the home crowd was dealt the grandest of treats.

As the ball bounced around the box, only to find Wernbloom, the next leg of this matchup escalated in importance.

I, like most football fans, was ready to dismiss this Moscow side but now have to conclude that all they need is another brilliant moment or two to stifle Real Madrid on the road.

It seems laughable, but so did a draw coming from absolutely nowhere.

Cristiano Ronaldo started things off with a goal in the 28th minute, but the fact that we all assumed it would be the first of a few means the world.

Los Blancos had a bevy of chances and blew it, and now they have a cakewalk turned into a true clash in the second leg.

FC Barcelona: 8 Reasons to Believe They Can Catch Real Madrid in La Liga

Barcelona’s 5-1 thumping of Valencia on Sunday represented an impressive return to form for arguably the best team in the world.

While the result ensured a gap of 11 points between the Catalan giants and third place, they remain adrift of league leaders Real Madrid, who hold a crucial 10-point lead over Barca.

With the business end of the season approaching, all is not lost for Barcelona and there is still plenty of points to play for.

Here are eight reasons why Barcelona should believe they can win La Liga this season.

Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik, Ezequiel Lavezzi: Napoli Should Sell All Three

Napoli owner Aurelio Di Laurentiis has invited Europe’s elite to make offers for Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Di Laurentiis would be wise to sell all three.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, film producer Di Laurentiis said whilst the Partenopei don’t need the money for their three main stars, they would listen to offers from clubs for the trio.

“If they have the money to pay, I am waiting for the offers.”

“…Thanks to God, I don’t need the money from anyone. I am rich enough to survive.”

“But if somebody wants to make an offer, we are here to listen. You never to close the door to anyone because we are polite.”

“If someone wants to make an offer, they can make an offer. We can laugh off their offer if we are not satisfied or we can say: ‘Let’s sit down and discuss this’.”

“In life, there is a always a price for everything. It is just a question of the right moment and the right people.”

Napoli, who lie sixth in Serie A, are in a healthy position financially and have posted profits for the last five consecutive years.

Di Laurentiis took over the club in 2004 when they were in Serie C, the Italian third division, and through fantastic financial management has engineered their rise back up to the top of the first division.

As the owner himself pointed out, only Arsenal and Bayern Munich are the other teams in the UEFA Champions League last 16 with a positive bank balance sheet.

However, to safeguard the club’s status in the higher echelons of Italian and European football, they would be wise to sell Cavani, Hamsik and Lavezzi, even though the trio have been instrumental up front for the side this season.

Cavani, the team’s pure striker, has scored 22 goals in 30 games this season, proving his stellar finishing ability by tucking away the plethora of chances presented to him.

Meanwhile, the all-action modern winger that is Hamsik has scored eight goals and made five assists from 22 matches this term. He has also made 42 key passes.

Lavezzi, the player who—in terms of importance—is to Napoli what Lionel Messi is to FC Barcelona or what Cristiano Ronaldo is to Real Madrid—in 19 Serie A matches has scored five goals, made three assists, hit 46 key passes and created 11 one-on-ones for teammates.

The trio have contributed 35 goals to Napoli this season, and are the attacking force which has thrust the team into a European heavyweight.

But, they are also players who can be sold for an incredibly high price.

Manchester United safeguarded their status at the top when they sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a record £80 million.

Napoli can easily do the same given that Cavani’s true estimated transfer market value is £24.5 million, but could be the subject of a £40 million offer from Chelsea.

Hamsik’s true estimate transfer market value is £21 million, but he’s long been linked with a £35 million move to the likes of Manchester United.

And Lavezzi, who unlike the other two will only have one big money move in him at 26, is said to be worth at least £26 million and has been linked with Manchester City.

Overall, the club would be likely to receive at least £70 million from the sale of their big three stars and could earn as much as £100 million or more.

As the club currently lie sixth in the table and could miss out on the Champions League next season and maybe the Europa League given the threat from Inter Milan, AS Roma and SS Lazio, such money would allow Napoli to spend what they need to get back up to the top without going into the red.

Given that they’ve also earned a lot already from their Champions League exploits—the club has already pocketed £11.2 million in prize money alone, and treble that figure including gate receipts, TV revenue, added merchandise sales, improved brand equity, etc.—the club could still run the same way it is now even without European football next season.

If they sold their three main stars, they’d have a colossal transfer war chest to rebuild appropriately.

Even if the impact of Cavani, Hamsik and Lavezzi wasn’t replaced with new signings, Napoli still have enough depth in their team.

They already have a strong core in their side, which are actually even more important than the attacking trio. And it doesn’t look like they’re separating soon.

Gokhan Inler pulls the strings in the heart of midfield, with Hugo Campagnaro as a defensive colossus. And, Morgan de Sanctis is hugely reliable in goal.

Hamsik doesn’t even need to be replaced with a new summer signing, given that the young and super talented Eduardo Vargas—signed in January from Universidad de Chile for £11.5 million—is waiting in the wings.

If Cavani goes, Goran Pandev will have the chance to step up to the plate, should Napoli sign him permanently.

Macedonia legend Pandev is hitting the athletic peak of his career at 28 and has scored five goals and made two assists from 12 starts this season.

The only man who really needs to be replaced with a new signing is Lavezzi, the one-of-a-kind creative player who could be called Mr. Napoli.

With a huge transfer budget at their disposal, the club could sign the best replacement their money and status can buy.

If the Partenopei sold their three main stars, bought a star replacement for Lavezzi and added a few depth signings to keep the quality and numbers right, the club would be in an unbelievably strong position for the seasons ahead.

If they miss out on Champions League or even Europa League football and do the above, it wouldn’t be long before they were not only back in the world’s most prestigious club competition, but also competing for the Serie A title.

Chelsea Football Club: Andre Villas Boas Hints That He Is Feeling the Pressure

Andre Villas-Boas resigned as manager of Porto at the end of the 2010-11 season to join Chelsea football club in England. Fast-forward to February 2012 and Chelsea isn’t doing so badly—nor are they actually setting the footballing world on fire.

Still in the Champions League and well on their way to achieving fourth in the league, Chelsea are doing reasonably well for a club in transition. Reasonable if you have reasonable expectations from the top that is.

Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea football club, clearly believes that his club and the manager that he appoints should be able to buy success through the millions that he sanctions for each wishful transfer.

The man demands instant success, something that is sometimes hard to achieve in a team sport like football—as it takes time for new personnel to get in sync with the rest of the club.

Carlo Ancelotti found out about Abramovich’s high expectations last season when he was sacked to bring in AVB. AVB himself is now showing signs that he is worried he may be shown the door soon, should Chelsea fail to achieve anything of note this season.

Villas-Boas has expressed his wish to have clarity within the club’s hierarchy to the extent that the club backs his vision for Chelsea’s long-term future. He further adds:

“In terms of the results this year, the speculation is normal given the cultural past of this football club. But you have to understand that there’s a different perspective now.

“We had a three-year project to change not only the team, but the culture and structure of the club.

“There’s a lot we needed to do, a lot of plans. That’s why I’m excited about the future.

“Having said that, we have to build a team to win trophies.

“We’re no longer in the Carling Cup and don’t have a chance to win the title. But we are still confident we can do well in the Champions League and the FA Cup.”

By the statements made, it seems as if AVB is buying himself some time by the “three-year-project” pill. He also goes on to say that he is excited about the future. I hope AVB knows that he is not fooling anyone, least of all Abramovich—by talking about exciting times in the future.

One thing that was refreshing to see, was a manager admitting that there was no chance of winning the league title—something that most others find insulting to confess. Such an attitude does appeal to the press and maybe the media may buy him some more time, by highlighting his good work.

Also, at the start of February, in a press conference, AVB was questioned on the possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to the Barclay’s Premier League. Interestingly, Villas-Boas not only admitted to being under pressure himself with Mourinho’s return—but named a few other managers as well.

At that time, Chelsea’s main rivals for fourth spot were Arsenal and Liverpool. One of the names that AVB mentioned was Kenny Dalglish.

Does that mean that AVB was more wary of the threat from a resurgent Liverpool side than from Arsenal?

It was a good ploy for unsettling rivals in the present.

It may have been a decent mind-game for the future too. Correlating the two interviews cited here, it might as well be that Villas-Boas was targeting Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United in the long run.

He talked about a three-year project, so he wants to make the league easier to win for himself. He knows that Mourinho has a very small chance of returning to Chelsea, considering his past with Abramovich.

Thus, he might have been envisioning the possibility of a new manager at United should Ferguson fail to win a single trophy this year.

A decent plan, but does it actually have the legs to come out right?

FA Cup Quarter Finals: Tie of the Round

The FA Cup quarter finals have thrown up some fascinating fixtures, and we are in for a good weekend of football. Everton and Sunderland will be a tightly-contested fixture, and the tactical minds of Moyes and O’Neill will clash to create a great game.

Tottenham-Stevenage against Bolton, even though in Football we shouldn’t make presumptions—but most of us are expecting a Tottenham win. If they do overcome Stevenage, I can see them go on to ease past Bolton.

Chelsea has a tough replay at St. Andrews. They will have to overcome a strong Birmingham outfit if they want to take on Leicester in the quarter finals.

All of these games will be fantastic matchups, but for me—the tie of the round is Stoke taking a trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

History doesn’t stack up well for Stoke—as they go into the match not winning a game at Anfield in nearly 53 years. But Stoke will be encouraged by their last outing at Anfield when they managed to shut out Liverpool, and really limited their chances to long-range efforts with the game finishing 0-0.

Liverpool also holds the upper hand in the FA Cup wins with seven wins to their name and six runners up medals—only Spurs, Arsenal and their fierce rivals Manchester United have a better cup record. Stoke had one runners up medal to their name when Manchester City overcame The Potters 1-0 in the 2011 final.

In the other league game, where Stoke took on Liverpool at The Britannia—The Potters caused Liverpool to lose their first game of the season. Jonathan Walter scored the only goal of the game, and Liverpool spurned every chance they got in front of goal. Asmir Begovic was the difference between the sides on the day—as he pulled off save after save.

These two sides have actually met each other three times already this season. The other match was in the Carling Cup Fourth Round. It took a Luis Suarez brace in the second half to overcome Stoke that had taken the lead just before half time—thanks to Kenwyne Jones.

Anfield is no longer the fortress that it once was and Stoke will really fancy their chances of progressing to the semifinals. This being said, Liverpool has a fantastic cup record. They will find themselves in the Carling Cup Final this season, and would relish the chance at another FA Cup run.

With Liverpool winning the competition back in 2006 and Stoke coming in as runners up last year, this is set to be a great match with both teams vying for a place in the semifinal.

They go in to battle for the fourth time this season—with each team having a win to their name and the other game being a draw. Everything is set for this one to be a classic.

Verdict – Stoke to shut out Liverpool and take the game by a single goal

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 6 Potential Replacements for Luis Suarez

It remains to be seen whether Luis Suarez has a future at Liverpool beyond this summer, but if the Uruguayan does chose to leave the Premier League behind, he’ll surely need replacing.

Liverpool paid £22.7 million for Suarez in January 2011, and would be hoping to at least recoup that amount if he exits Anfield at the end of the season.

Those funds could potentially be spent on one of the following six attacking talents to be linked to Liverpool in recent weeks.
